50,000 People in 35 Settlements Now Have Access to Healthcare
Baitulmaal, a Dallas-based international humanitarian aid organization, is providing $1.6 million of aid to the support Bandiiradley Hospital, which serves about 50,000 people in 35 settlements in Somalia. Baitulmaal is also providing additional monthly funding to support costs associated with running the facility, such as salaries and administrative expenses.
The rural town of Bandiiradley is located in central Somalia. The closest hospital is approximately 70 km (43.5 miles) from Bandiiradley. With poverty widespread in the region, people without access to cars have no way to seek emergency medical care. To make matters worse, the privatization of Somalia’s healthcare system has made medical care financially inaccessible for most living in such poverty.
Since Bandiiradley Hospital opened its doors, doctors see an average of 60 or more patients per day, most of whom are pregnant women and children.
“This hospital is providing free healthcare to people who would otherwise not be able to see a doctor because of distance or cost,” said Mazen Mokhtar, Executive Director of Baitulmaal. “This can often be the difference between life and death for people in this region, and we’re thankful that our donors continue to support this and other vital programs.”
One of the items in the shipment funded by Baitulmaal is the antibiotic Doxycycline, which is used to treat bacterial infections and prevent malaria. Thanks to Baitulmaal donors, the doctors at Bandiiradley Hospital will now be able to provide about 10,000 prescriptions of this life-saving medication.
